The monastery houses a Saint Simon Wren church, built in a natural cavity in Egypt.

This is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. This cave church, attracts not less than 70 000 Copts who praise Jesus every week.

This cave church is one of the largest churches in the country, 70,000 Christians gather there each week to praise and worship Jesus. This place houses one of the oldest Christian community. The cavity also known as the Monastery of Saint Simon , is located on the Mokattam mountain , south of Cairo , a place known as the city "junk " because of a large population of garbage collectors who live there ( the Zabbaleen ) . Over 90% of the inhabitants of the Zabbaleen community in the village of Mokattan are Coptic Christians. In the Arab world , surrounded by predominantly Muslim country , it is a challenge to maintain and sustain the Coptic culture.

Christian Voice reports that the church communities in Egypt declined more due to political struggles of the sagging economy, and the rise of an insurrectional activism. The exodus of Christians intensifies fear for their future in the Middle East, some are concerned about their fate in Egypt. " They migrate mainly in the USA , in search of better opportunities, due to the uncertainty of the situation in Egypt ," said the Rev. Markos Ayoub, who leads Sunday services at St. Mark English. "It is not easy to be a Christian Copt in the Middle East right now, view the insurrectionary mood in Egypt. "

The cave church can accommodate 20 000 participants. Thousands more gathered outside to join the meetings each week .

This incredible evening of praise took place in this extraordinary place .
